'Oscar in China'

The 28 minutes film 'Oscar in China' takes the viewer on a journey by young boy Oscar to the metropole Shanghai. The film lets the viewer explore a far away town through the eyes of a child. The result is a beautiful portrait of a rapidly changing city.

The entire film has been recorded with just a small digital photo camera with a video function. At that time, in 2008, the video recording quality of digital photo cameras was still very poor, similar to the quality of mobile phones. Nonetheless the entire film, all the photos, videos and sounds, were recorded with this small, bright pink, pocket camera.

'The artist as avatar'

Thesis written by Cym for her research at the Interaction Design & Unstable Media department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. In her publication she explores the artist as a person. What is the role of the artist in society? And how has this role changed in the 21st century? How do we see the artist and what do we expect from the artist?

The thesis is written in Dutch.

'The artist can't dance'

In connection with her thesis Cym has created an installation in which she questions the many psychological labels which are used today in situations where certain behaviour is not how it 'should be', where behaviour is different than what is 'usual' or, even worse, is different from what is 'normal'. In this interactive installation she tries to create a psychological report of the typical behaviour of 'the artist'. The final report is still yet to come.

'Into the Unknown'

A video installation with material collected during a visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Two videoloops next to each other visualize the ongoing process of trying to reach peace, a neverending loop of an ongoing, returning process.

On the left is the Mediterranean Sea in Tel Aviv, a view into the distance, the wide open sea. On the right is a woman walking through a gate. It is the gate towards the checkpoint in Bethlehem, which every person who wants to travel from Bethlehem to Jerusalem has to pass. The woman in the video is Palestinian. She is not allowed to pass the checkpoint into Israel. It is impossible for her to reach the sea on the left side.
